About Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has been a cornerstone of faith, education, and community life in Miles City, Montana for well over a century. Its roots trace back to 1879, when Father Christostom Foffa celebrated the first Mass for Catholic settlers and Irish soldiers stationed at Fort Keogh. Just two years later, the first Sacred Heart Church was built, marking the beginning of a parish that would grow alongside the community itself.

Education and service quickly became central to Sacred Heart’s mission. In 1884, the Ursuline Sisters arrived from Ohio to establish schools and serve Native communities, laying the foundation for Catholic education across eastern Montana. Their dedication continued through rebuilding after fires, constructing a brick academy in 1902, and running schools and catechism programs for generations of local families.

The current Sacred Heart Church, located at 120 North Montana Avenue, was completed in 1924 under Father J.J. O’Carroll. Over the decades, the parish expanded with schools, a gymnasium, and the Riley Center addition in 2016, while continuing to modernize and care for its historic buildings. Today, the Ursuline Convent of the Sacred Heart is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural and educational significance.

Sacred Heart Parish remains a vibrant Catholic community, serving not only Miles City but also Broadus and surrounding areas. Guided by its history of faith, education, and service, Sacred Heart continues to be a welcoming place where tradition meets a living, active parish family.
